A dull light peeked from outside my room.

Everything seems to be in slow momentary motion.

When I abruptly noticed this forlorn shadow,

Sitting at one corner of my murky and ominous room.

I said “hi” but it didn’t answer back.

I wonder why it was just looking intently at my direction.

I reached my hands to it.

But as I tried to draw closer,

It slowly vanished into the thin air and I’m oblivious where it had gone too.

It felt so bad, really bad.

I thought I am to have someone to talk and laugh with.

Not until this moment.

It left me like everyone else had done.

Do you know this feeling?

The pity I feel for myself when I was left by the only person I’ve trusted my heart with.

The feeling that made me suffer all along.

2010 na siguro ang pinakaaabangang taon ng buong bansa, dahil dito gaganapin ang National Elections. Dito pipili at hahalal ng bagong mga pinuno ang buong bansa. Ngayon siguro ay tinatanong mo na sa sarili mo kung ano nga ba ang role mo bilang Pilipino sa darating na eleksyon? Magpaparehistro ka ba? Boboto ka ba?

Inihahandog ng PETA (Philippine Educational Theater Association) Youth Arm, ang “Bagong Bilang” isang dula-palihan na tatalakay sa darating na eleksyon. Ito ay magpapakita sa kung gaano kahalaga ang paglahok ng bawat isa, lalo na ang mga kabataan. Hindi lamang ito isang palabas na panonoorin kundi isang palihan na ang mga kalahok ay maaari ring magpahayag ng kanilang mga opinyon tungkol sa eleksyon.

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) had its annual Summer Workshop from April 21 to May 16. PETA has been known not just for its mind-opening productions but also for its mission to educate by means of theater.

Spearheaded by Mr. Robert “RB” A. Andres, PETA – School of People’s Theater Coordinator, the 2009 Summer Theater Arts Workshop was a success. not just for the people who enrolled but also for the members who were involved in the project as facilitators, whose experience as artist-teachers expanded.

The members of PETA’s Youth Arm, formerly, the Metropolitan Teen Theater League (MTTL) co-facilitated the workshops along with members from the Kalinangan Ensemble. MTTL members who were involved include Jason Barcial and Noela Relox as co-facilitators for Children’s Theater 1A, Aya Carino and Tricia Husena for Children’s Theater 1B, Icee Po for Children’s Theater 2B, and Aaron Ching for Teen Theater.

The PETA Summer Workshop served to train the members of the youth arm in becoming more effective and dynamic when it comes to teaching.

The following courses were offered in the PETA Summer Theater Arts Workshop. Childrens Theater 1 and 2 and Teen Theater were held every morning. Theater Arts and Creative Pedagogy for Teachers were held during the afternoon, Basic Acting, Creative Dance Theater, and Creative Musical Theater (Theater foor Artistic Development courses) were held in the evening.

While others were involved in facilitating the workshops, some MTTL members enrolled in the courses for Theater for Artistic Development.

Ito ang araw-araw kong itinatanong sa sarili ko, “Ano ba ang susuotin ko?” Oo, kahit ako ay naguguluhan sa kung ano nga ba ang dapat kong suotin. Mukhang madali lang sagutin ang tanong kong ito, pero nitong mga nakaraang araw, hindi. Hindi ko kasi alam kung kelan uulan at kelan maaraw na maaraw. Kung minsan ay naka longsleeves ako pero biglang tataas ang araw, at kung minsan naman ay wala akong dalang panlamig at biglang lalakas ang ulan. Lahat ng ito ay dahil sa CLIMATE CHANGE.

Ano nga ba ang Climate Change? Ang climate change ay ang pagbabago-bago ng panahon na masmahaba o masmaikli pa sa inaasahan. Ayon sa Presidential Task Force on Climate Change “The Philippines has experienced temperature spikes brought about by climate change. It has been observed that warming is experienced most in the northern and southern regions of the country, while Metro Manila has warmed less than most parts. In addition, the regions that have warmed the most (northern Luzon, Mindanao) have also dried the most…Hot days and hot nights have become more frequent. Extreme weather events have also occurred more frequently since 1980. ” Dahil sa impormasyong ito marahil ay magkakaroon na tayo ng batayan sa mga pagbabago na nagaganap, lalo na sa ating klima. At dahil din dito mas madalas na nating tinatanong sa sarili natin kung “Ano nga ba ang susuotin ko?”

Maliban sa problema sa kung ano ang dapat nating suotin ay ang pagkakaroon ng iba’t ibang sakit na dumadapo sa ating bansa tulad ng Ubo, Sipon, Trangkaso, Allergies, at iba pa. Hindi din natin malalaman kung kelan dadapo sa atin ang mga sakit na ito. Pero sa mga nangyayari na ito, siguro masmahalagang isipin natin kung ano ang dapat gawin sa problemang ito kesa sa kung ano ang dapat nating suotin.

During the past months, I’ve gone through transitions. Some, I was already expecting and preparing myself for, but others took me by surprise.

Leaving high school was one of the major transitions I had to experience. I had to learn about and eventually adjust to college life – having to enroll all by myself, find required readings in various books which were located in different college libraries, and wait in line for a whole lot of other things. Aside from these, I entered the university during its centennial year. In a way, I guess, it was a transition year for the school.

Among other changes that came my way was an unexpected break-up (we’re together again), a first (and failed) attempt in an open audition for a musical, my mom’s steady recovery from colon cancer, my sister’s 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm shift at the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and my 18th birthday.

This was my world, the scope of my concerns. I focused most of my attention on my studies during the academic year, and last summer, I took basic acting classes in PETA’s summer workshop. After that, I joined PETA’s youth arm.

That’s when my world got a whole lot bigger. Our batch entered the youth arm in its transition year (though being a new member during the transition year doesn’t make me feel the changes being implemented). Joining PETA’s youth arm helped me see and realize that I could make a difference in our country, no matter how small I felt.

With the upcoming elections, I know just how important it is to be involved, to register, and to vote. Our participation could bring about great and positive changes for our country. Yes, even though the Philippines has been regarded as a “developing country” for many, many years now, I still haven’t lost hope.

As a first-time voter, this coming elections is a big transition in my life. I have to figure out where to register, how to register, where to vote, how to vote, and WHO to vote. The last one is by far the most confusing for me. I don’t really know who to trust when it comes to politicians and wannabe politicians.

In the 2010 elections, the first-time voters are not the only ones who will feel the transition, but the whole country. The elections will now be automated. Hopefully, this will make the elections fair and scam-free (HOPEFULLY). The 2010 elections offers a ray of hope for our country. Maybe, just maybe, this will bring the change we’ve been waiting for. (Or am I just a naive young Filipino?)

However, if we are to taste even a bit of this change, we have to do our part – not only through registering and voting, but also through striving to make ourselves and each other better.

As I conclude this article, I’d like to share a message from an artist who gave his everything in trying to make the world the place he believed it was supposed to be. This goes not only for us “ordinary” people, but for the people who love the green stuff. (I’d rather they go green than love the green stuff.)

“We are the world. We are the children. So, let’s heal the world and make it a better place by looking at ourselves and making that change.”
